What is Retatrutide?

Retatrutide, a novel weight loss medication

Retatrutide, a novel weight loss medication developed by Eli Lilly, the same company behind Mounjaro, is a diabetes drug known for its capacity to induce substantial weight loss. It is administered via subcutaneous injection once a week, similarly to Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy. At present, Retatrutide is undergoing evaluation for its effectiveness in managing obesity and type 2 diabetes, and the preliminary findings are encouraging.

A Research study of Retatrutide

In one research study, Retatrutide was assessed in individuals with type 2 diabetes and a BMI ranging from 25 to 50. The medication exhibited dose-dependent weight loss effects, signifying that higher doses led to more significant weight reduction. After 36 weeks, participants receiving the lowest weekly dose of 0.5 mg experienced a weight loss of just over 3% of their body weight over nine months, slightly surpassing the placebo group. In contrast, those taking the highest weekly dose of 12 mg saw a remarkable reduction of nearly 17% of their body weight. Additionally, the drug effectively lowered their blood sugar levels.

The side effects observed were generally mild to moderate and primarily gastrointestinal in nature, affecting the stomach and intestines. These side effects were akin to those associated with other weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The most commonly reported side effects included nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. Increases in heart rate were noted in clinical trials, particularly with higher doses of Retatrutide, but these effects diminished after the initial six months of treatment. Overall, the medication was deemed safe in both studies, consistent with the safety profiles of similar weight loss drugs.
